A Historic Milestone: West Virginia Academy Celebrates Its First Graduating Class

Some moments define a school's history forever. For West Virginia Academy, our first commencement ceremony was one of those unforgettable milestones.

This spring, we proudly celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2026-our very first graduating class. As West Virginia's first brick-and-mortar public charter school, this ceremony represented so much more than the presentation of diplomas. It was the realization of a vision, the celebration of years of hard work, and the beginning of countless new journeys.

When West Virginia Academy first opened its doors in 2022, we dreamed of creating a school where scholars would be challenged academically, supported personally, and encouraged to grow into thoughtful, capable leaders. Just four years later, we watched that dream come full circle as our inaugural seniors crossed the stage, each carrying with them a story of perseverance, growth, and achievement.

These graduates are more than the first recipients of a West Virginia Academy diploma-they are pioneers. They helped shape the culture of our school, built traditions that future Trailblazers will carry on, and demonstrated what it means to lead with courage and determination. Their legacy will forever be woven into the story of West Virginia Academy.

The ceremony was made even more meaningful by the presence of distinguished guests who joined us in celebrating this historic achievement. We were honored to welcome Senator Mike Oliverio, whose words encouraged graduates to embrace every opportunity that lies ahead and to continue serving their communities with integrity and purpose. We were also privileged to welcome Barry Holstein, Executive Director of the Professional Charter Schools Board, who recognized the significance of this moment-not only for our graduates, but for the future of public charter education throughout West Virginia. Their encouragement served as a powerful reminder that our graduates are part of something much larger than themselves: a new chapter in educational opportunity for families across our state.

As families cheered, faculty reflected with pride, and graduates turned their tassels, there was a shared understanding that this ceremony represented years of dedication from so many people. Parents entrusted us with their children. Teachers invested countless hours encouraging and challenging our scholars. Staff members worked behind the scenes to create opportunities for success. Together, we celebrated not only the accomplishments of six remarkable graduates, but also the community that helped make this day possible.

Our graduates now begin exciting new chapters, pursuing careers and opportunities in higher education, military service, education, emergency medical services, and outdoor leadership. While their paths may lead them in different directions, they will always share the unique distinction of being West Virginia Academy's very first graduating class.

As we look toward the future, this milestone reminds us why West Virginia Academy exists: to provide a high-quality, tuition-free public education where scholars are empowered to discover their potential, pursue excellence, and make a meaningful impact on the world around them.

To the Class of 2026, thank you for believing in a new school, embracing the unknown, and helping build something extraordinary. You were the first to blaze this trail, and because of you, countless scholars will follow.

Congratulations, Trailblazers. Your journey is just beginning, and your West Virginia Academy family will always be cheering you on.
