There are some exciting changes coming to West Virginia Academy's campus. We want to thank WV Best Signs for the beautiful signage on our building. Brian Knight and his crew have guaranteed that these signs will endure for many years to come and, as such, they will be featured both at our current campus and our new facility.
We are also thrilled to announce our new Open Campus Policy for our older high school students, which was approved by the WVA board during the board meeting held last Thursday. As an institution, we are firm believers in providing our students with the necessary opportunities to excel in real-world situations. Our primary goal is to foster time management, self-discipline, and communication skills in our scholars, and then empower them to apply these teachings beyond the school premises. Consequently, we have decided to open our campus to all students aged 16 and above that meet the minimum academic and behavioral standards. Parents are able to opt-out of this policy if they prefer that their child remain in a closed campus setting. While WVA scholars enrolled in the WVU Access program have already been permitted to attend college classes off-campus at specified times, we are now extending this privilege to include lunch breaks and other valid reasons during the school day.
For scholars to benefit from this new policy, they need to meet certain criteria: they must be at least 16 years old, maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and have a clean behavioral record. Being late for afternoon classes following time off campus will result in being marked as tardy. Furthermore, if the school administration discovers that students are misusing the policy by skipping classes or consistently tardy to afternoon classes, their open campus privilege can be restricted or revoked.
At the age of 16, every student has the opportunity to take part in the open campus policy. Parents who prefer their child to remain on campus can choose to exclude their child by completing an Opt-Out of Open Campus form at the front office. These forms can also be sent to parents via email. If an Opt-Out form is completed, the student will not have permission to leave the campus, which includes attending WVU ACCESS classes, until the parent authorizes their child's participation in writing.
We are proud of the WVA scholars who serve as role models, not only for the younger students, but also for the WVU community. University professors are impressed by the high level of professionalism and academic excellence demonstrated by our students in their courses. Next semester we look forward to increasing the number of students taking advantage of this wonderful program.
Stay tuned for the introduction of a new pilot program next year, allowing our secondary students to apply for internships at different local businesses, enhancing their resumes for their futures.
