West Virginia Academy achieved an early renewal of its charter agreement for meeting substantially all of its academic and operational goals over its initial years of operations. WVA was authorized in 2022 as West Virginia's first-ever charter school and was still in its initial five year term when it qualified for the early renewal. James Paul, the executive director of the PCSB, issued a performance report and renewal guidance in February indicating that WVA had met every one of its measurable goals over its first two years of operations. These goals included outperforming comparable non-charter public schools in terms of student academic proficiency as well as participating in the state accountability systems and engaging in proper stewardship of its financial resources.
The academy's new five-year term begins on July 1, 2025 and runs through July of 2030. The renewed charter agreement was signed on behalf of the PCSB by Adam Kissel, the PCSB board chair, and on behalf of WVA by John Treu, its founder and governing board chair. "This is a really important moment for West Virginia Academy," said Mr. Treu, "we are doing exactly what we set out to do and more families will be able to benefit as this early renewal sends a signal that our school will be here for the long term."
WVA's first three years included a consistent record of excellence with respect to academic progress among its students, a $500,000 award for academic innovation by the Yass Foundation, and a seven-figure competitive federal grant award for growth. During this upcoming term, WVA will look forward to its first class of graduating seniors in the Spring of 2026, the completion of its new facility in the Cheat Lake area of Morgantown by the summer of 2027, and the continued expansion of its award-winning programs for more students in the greater Morgantown area.
