West Virginia Academy's Progressive Teaching Overview
Core Knowledge School
West Virginia Academy believes in the classical educational approach. In trial studies, schools that use the Core Knowledge curriculum have been shown to “improve literacy and close the achievement gap between advantaged and disadvantaged students.”
This curriculum strives to provide a broad, solid foundation of knowledge that is developed as a student progress through school. The curriculum not only builds on the previous year, it connects across subjects making it more coherent and effective.

The Core Knowledge curriculum includes the topics:
WVA Primary School
WVA Primary School levels instruction in Math, Reading and Language every morning using the Direct Instruction Methodology.

The Direct Instruction method was founded on the belief that all students can learn when the instruction is well-designed and effectively implemented.
Mastery of prior knowledge is essential in order to move on to learning new concepts and skills.
6th Grade through 10th grade
WVA Secondary School
WVA Secondary School follows the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program.

This International program encourages our older scholars to make connections between their studies and the real world.

It empowers our scholars to study a wide range of issues and ideas of local, national, and global significance.
